While the Moon is New

We were out under the stars last night
On top of the lookout
Between the garden and the orchard
Trying to see with the whole of the eye and not focus
Under blankets and with pillows
The Perseid meteors showering
We watched widely until our eyes became heavy
And we’ll be out again tonight while the moon is new
For sometimes it is hard to tell what’s important in life
But lying together under the clear sky in the light of the milky way
With satellites passing, jets soaring and meteors streaking
With the barred owl calling and the green frogs ringing
And the crickets singing
Sometimes it is not hard at all
