Compare Yourself With The Sun

yellowwarbler by drawing the motmot

Compare yourself with the sun
It is the only thing to do
There are only loop trails through the woods
Run your hands along the hackberry
Run your eyes across a carpet of dog’s tooth violet
See the smoke of a hundred Dutchman’s breeches
Lining the hillside, pantaloons pointing skyward
There is nothing like a black walnut crown
Stumble upon the cherry-red fruit, a bed of goldenseal
Pick your teeth with a sassafras twig and then dogwood
Remember the Caribbean queen, summer migrant
Nesting in the tulip saplings and blackberries
For when you live among men you will fail
You’ll fail comparing yourself to any of them
You’ll fail comparing yourself to all of them
And it will be like closing your eyes to the spring ephemeral wildflowers
Closing your eyes bramble fruit and greenbrier shoot
Closing your eyes to the passing skies and autumn’s golden glow
So, compare yourself with the sun
It is the only thing to do
