Winter In Indiana

geese in snow by graham clark

Its winter now
And the Indiana freezes
Come and go

The glass gauge was brought indoors
And now we measure the rain
In closet pots collecting roof leaks

This morning the pond was clear of ice
And where the pasture slopes to the water

Down flew a crew of Buff and Pilgrim geese

I watched as they landed,
Sliding on and into the water

Afterwards, they shook the enjoyment of flight from their tail feathers

It’s winter now in Indiana

The end of dawn is a brighter grey
A misty rain begins the day
