Straight Thru The Heart

The idea was not bowing to the whims of collective judgement
And there is nothing wrong with the idea
Just as there is nothing wrong with collective judgement
Except that it is bowed to

You see everyone pushing things around on Facebook
Poised on the precipice and ready to deny it all
Three times before the cock crows twice

I can’t possibly know what
Independence meant to you

For the nature of truth is without rules
And I can’t possibly know what independence means to me

But I think I understand, in a worldly sense, that it is
Like Ed Snowden drawing architectural designs for the Privacy Building

And, I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew but
Do you remember Cassie’s grandmother in Roll of Thunder?

She knew all about property and ownership, freedom and independence
Privilege and slavery, power and fear

Can there be independence on the Internet
Where the world is rules
And truth “empties the ash trays on a whole other level”

So the poet is slave to form
And there is “no meaning but in things”
And the seed germinates when the radicle breaks through
Or “you’ll find out when you reach the top”

And I can’t pretend that I want anything more
Than just to lay down
With nothing to defend
Like everyone else

But I can’t do this anymore
For every time I miss the mark
It goes straight through my heart

So there is the only truth,

Every time I miss the mark
It goes straight through my heart
