Cult of Progress

Hard to know sometimes
If you’re going backward or forward
But I guess it feels good
That it isn’t all fixed
And this is a road you’ve never been on
You never chose a direction
Never flew a flag or marched in the army
Only judged a little, then let it go

  1. I know the future is impossible to predict – boy, have I learned that in the last three years – but sometimes it would be really nice to know if you’re moving forward or backward.

    1. What got me thinking about this was buying a new (old) truck. I was very close to pulling the trigger on an ’06 F-150 XLT. I didn’t but probably will on something similar soon. More debt. Backwards. But somehow is it forwards too? I don’t know.

      1. If it has a cup holder for your coffee, and a CD player for Lead Belly and Adya, and a bed that fits all the needed irregular wood, and the enthusiastic pile of kids, and worn bikes and sleds, and the big turkeys, and the new trees for planting, and many many memories, then it is never “going backwards.” Kahlil Gibran, in his famous “Prophet” said: “Even those who limp go not backward.”
